To keep your smile as healthy as possible and avoid dental issues before they become bigger concerns, we recommend that you have a comprehensive dental exam at least once per year. These exams can allow our team to diagnose dental problems early on and minimize your future treatment needs. Comprehensive dental exams at Wollaston Dental Group thoroughly assess your oral health by checking for tooth decay (cavities), gum disease, and signs of oral cancer. Experienced general dentist Dr. James McDonough will also evaluate your bite and jaw joints (temporomandibular joints, or TMJ) and let you know if you have any treatment needs that should be addressed. Digital x-rays may also be taken to allow us better diagnostic insight into the health of your teeth, jawbone, and any restorations that you may have. If you live near Quincy, MA, schedule an annual dental examination for you and your family at Wollaston Dental Group.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer includes any abnormal cell growth in the mouth, including the gums, jawbone, lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, throat, hard and soft palates, and salivary glands. Every exam at Wollaston Dental Group includes a screening for oral cancer to look for sores, lesions, and lumps or any other indication of abnormal, precancerous, or cancerous tissues. Dr. McDonough will also palpate the jaw and neck areas for swollen lymph nodes, nodules, and other concerns. Should any areas of concern be found, Dr. McDonough may refer you to a specialist for a biopsy and further care.

Quincy, MA residents of every age should undergo a dental exam at least once each year. Some of the most common dental issues, like gum disease (the primary reason for tooth loss), may not exhibit symptoms that you can readily identify. When dental issues are caught early, you may have a wider range of treatment options and a greater chance at a full recovery.
The ADA (American Dental Association) suggests that young children go to the dentist before they turn one. During your child's initial visit, Dr. McDonough can provide information on common problems, like teething, baby bottle tooth decay, and the use of pacifiers. The team at Wollaston Dental Group can teach you how to care for and clean your child's gums and teeth so they may develop healthy habits early in life. Dental exams are also important for older children as their teeth and jaw develop.
What To Expect
Dr. McDonough will go over any health concerns you have, medications you may be taking, and how they might impact your dental health by causing issues, like dry mouth and tooth decay. Your exam will then begin with a cursory evaluation of your tongue, gums, teeth, throat, palate, inside your cheeks, and other oral checkpoints. This includes looking for symptoms of oral cancer in and around the oral cavity. Using the latest in diagnostic technology, we may take digital x-rays to check for hidden concerns and evaluate your gum health through a screening for periodontal disease. Dr. McDonough will also assess your neck, head, and jaw, including your bite (how your upper and lower teeth meet) and TMJ. Using an instrument called an explorer, he will evaluate each tooth and check any restorations you have, such as fillings, crowns, or bridges, to assess the fit and wear. Any dental concerns discovered during your exam and options for how to best treat them will also be presented to you during this visit.
The follow-up period after your exam will depend on your oral health. If Dr. McDonough does not detect any concerns, then the only recommendation would be to follow a good home oral care routine along with annual dental exams and biannual professional cleanings at Wollaston Dental Group. If you do have treatment needs, we will review these procedures and schedule your treatment visits at a time most convenient for you.
Since a dental exam is crucial to your oral health, it is frequently covered by dental insurance. We can contact your insurance to calculate your coverage and estimate any out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not have dental insurance, Wollaston Dental Group accepts several payment options, including special patient financing plans. Dr. McDonough and our caring team are pleased to work with you to help you get the dental care needed for a healthy, confident smile.
