What is Fluoride Treatment?
The importance of fluoride in minimizing the risk of tooth decay has been shown by the ADA (American Dental Association), the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Medical Association (AMA), and several other medical organizations. Communities that add fluoride to their drinking water have fewer problems with cavities (tooth decay) among their local residents. A mineral found in the earth and some foods, fluoride builds up bones and strengthens dental enamel and other tooth structures. Fluoride treatments at Wollaston Dental Group in Quincy, MA are typically given during dental cleaning visits for younger patients as their teeth develop and those who are at a higher risk of experiencing tooth decay. For more information about professional fluoride treatments, schedule a dental exam with general dentist Dr. James McDonough.

Is Fluoride Treatment Right for Me?
Professional fluoride treatments can be given to all patients, though they are most often provided for children in developmental stages. Dr. McDonough also suggests fluoride treatments for adult patients whose drinking water is not fluoridated or who are more susceptible to tooth decay. Wollaston Dental Group may provide different fluoride formulas to meet the specific needs of our patients, including neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth or acidulated phosphate fluoride for individuals with dental restorations (crowns and bridges). We may also offer a choice of flavors to make treatments easier for younger patients.
How Does Fluoride Treatment Work?
Professional fluoride treatments are generally provided twice a year immediately following a dental cleaning. Once a flavor is selected, the hygienist will begin to prepare your treatment as either a rinse, gel, foam, or paint-on varnish. Depending on the formulation and type, the application may be kept on the teeth for several minutes to allow the enamel time to absorb the fluoride. Our hygienists will use suction to help clear the mouth after the treatment and will likely ask that you avoiding eating, drinking, or rinsing for at least 30 minutes following a fluoride application.
What Can I Expect After Fluoride Treatment?
Nausea and vomiting may occur if any fluoride is swallowed, but this should subside within 24 hours after the treatment. In certain cases, Dr. McDonough may recommend fluoride tablets to use between visits. Since it can be toxic in large doses, you should monitor these supplements closely and keep them out of reach of children. While these treatments strengthen the teeth and help reduce the risk of cavities, it is still essential to continue or establish a regular oral care routine at home by using a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. We also recommend that you schedule routine dental exams and cleanings at Wollaston Dental Group so our team can continue to assess the need for professional fluoride treatments.
Is Fluoride Treatment Covered by Dental Insurance?
Many dental insurance companies cover professional fluoride treatments for patients under a certain age; however, fluoride coverage for teens and adults may be limited. In any case, our staff will work to help you get the most coverage through your insurance before calculating any personal expenses. For patients without dental insurance, Wollaston Dental Group accepts several payment methods and may be able to help you obtain financing if needed.
